Analysing Jaws

Today's daily style fix on the wonderful Nowness site sees Accessories blogger and Shoe Designer Marc Hare AKA Mr Hare dissect the cult 1975 film 'Jaws' from a style perspective. The piece proves very interesting and incredibly acurate.

Milan_SS12: McQueen

Three seasons into her position as Creative Director of Alexander McQueen and Sarah Burton appears to be sitting comfortably in the Master's chair. On the back of two beautiful, well crafted menswear collections, the S/S 12 collection showcased at Milan this week was a continuation of form for Burton. The McQueen aesthetic is still there, the british quirkiness, the sharp tailoring, and the translucent sense of macabre and destruction. Yet I feel Burton is beginning to find her own signature with label.
The collection conjures up references of 70's Glam, Let It Bleed era Stones and even reminded me in parts of Dior Homme under Hedi Slimane. The tailoring was as exquisite as ever, even visiting the realms of the Nudie Suit, to great effect.

'Protection' by Massive Attack, 1994. Rediscovered Massive Attack recently and has been a permanent fixture on the playlist. Excellent video too.

Linna_Muuseum

While in Tallinn I decided to take a look at this collection celebrating Estonian photography during the 19th and 20th Centuries. I was naturally attracted to the details, styling and dress of the subjects, which were often quaint and beautiful.

Brighton_Rocks_130511

Spent Friday enjoying time in Brighton for the Great Escape festival. It's a place that always lingers at the back of my mind until I decide again to visit again and am soon reminded why I loved it so much in the first place. For me it's a spectacular town full of romance and nostalgia, in whatever form they might choose to take in one's mind.

There was something quite dreamy about strolling the Pier during sunset and seeing the attractions wind down into a slumber. There's a contrasting feeling of being engulfed by the bright lights, fairground rides and painted boards while lurking through the gaps in the floorboards is the dark turbulent ocean tide.

Plateau.

Memories always close.

Monday presented myself and those close with the first anniversary of our friend Tom Sutch's death.
The past year has brought on varying emotions that can sometimes provoke questions about how we live or the effect things can sometimes have.
However you are always left with the beauty and the memories that will always outlive and will forever be revisited.

Céline A/W 11/12

I must stray once again from menswear to give notable mention to Phoebe Philo. Her A/W 11/12 collection for Céline (as shown above) was amazing. Over the last few seasons she has created a distinctive, ever so slightly androgynous, yet strongly feminine style.

Not since Hedi Slimane's collections for Dior Homme can I think of anybodies work being so consistently fresh exciting and directional as Philo's has for Céline. The line, silhouette and colour palettes have been perfect. And like Dior under Slimane, Céline as a brand has been completely transformed.

A Brief Note on Androgyny/ Soar AW11

It's no secret that androgyny has been a part of fashion and lifestyle for generations. It is also something I have always had a fascination with since perhaps my early teens.
The current cultural generation has again embraced the trend for blurring boundaries in identity and dress. As could be seen in Gaga's Jo Calderone, styled by Nicola Formichetti.

I worked two seasons for Tim Soar and was continually inspired by his crossover aesthetic. Seamlessly merging traditional sartorial male elegance with sportswear and contemporary fabrication. When he explored womenswear last season for his S/S 11 collection it seemed to be a move that made perfect sense, coming at a time when Phoebe Philo was creating minimal womenswear with a masculine edge at Céline. For A/W 11/12 Soar has merged the two to create designs without a gender. A few images from his A/W lookbook can be seen above.

I have fllen slightlyion love with these Brothel Creepers. The subject of a collaboration between the the newly directed (courtesy of Nicola Formichetti) Thierry Mugler and Rockabilly Punk footwear label Underground. The shoes were showcased at the Mugler show in Paris for AW11/12 recently. The collaboration looks amazing, kepping the finer qualities the the Brothel Keeper but giving it a more sartorial edge.

After 4 arduous years the wait is over. 'The King Of Limbs' was launched a day early this morning and, as expected, sent Radiohead's site crashing.

Sumptuous sponge cake from Chinatown. Wish I could have had them both!

MUGLER A/W11

The last few years has seen Nicola Formichetti become extremely hot property in Fashion. On top of his vastly impressive portfolio he is currently Fashion Director for Vogue Hommes Japan, Uni-Qlo and, most publicly, Lady GaGa. But it wasn't until a few months ago that he was presented with the position of Creative Director at Thierry Mugler.

He debuted his first show on Wednesday in Paris and definitely didn't disappoint. His distinctive trademarks are evident in the heavily styled looks. This and some of the oversized tailoring and silhouettes came together for a very fresh and bold collection that I’m sure will do wonders for the brand.
